Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai has publicly backed women’s rights and said it was the government’s responsibility to provide them with a safe education in the country.Speaking at a conference to mark the death of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, a former Islamic Emirate leader, Stanikzai said women should be given their rights based on Afghan culture and Islamic values.
“Women cannot even claim their inheritance. They are denied the right to education. Where will women study Shari’ah subjects? Women form part of the Afghan population,” she said.Stanikzai criticized the small budget for economic development and said that due to the economic crisis people were being forced to leave the country.
“We do not have a seat in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), we do not have a seat in the United Nations and we do not have a political office in Europe,” he said.Speaking at the same meeting, another Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammad Yaqub, condemned the economic sanctions in Afghanistan.
“They imposed economic sanctions on Afghanistan and plotted to attack us in Afghanistan,” he said. The Taliban’s decision to ban female students in more than a sixth grade from schooling has drawn widespread criticism at national and international levels. In addition, the Taliban regime that took over Kabul in August last year reduced women’s rights and freedoms, and women were severely excluded from work due to economic hardship and restrictions.
