Tensions have escalated around Taiwan as China conducts extensive military drills, prompting the US Special Forces stationed in Taiwan to remain on high alert. Taiwan, in response, has strategically deployed its Hsiung Feng III (HF-3) supersonic anti-ship missiles along the coast in anticipation of potential Chinese aggression, which could escalate in early June.
Chinese Military Presence and Exercises
Currently, over 42 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 and J-20 fighter jets, are actively flying around Taiwan, with 28 crossing the median line. Additionally, China has positioned 15 warships and 16 coast guard vessels around the island. The drills also feature advanced weaponry such as Type 052D Destroyers, Type 071 Large Amphibious Warfare Ships, DF-15B short-range ballistic missiles, and the PHL-03 multi-launch rocket system.
Taiwan’s Defensive Measures
In response to the looming threat, Taiwan has fortified its defenses by deploying the HF-3 supersonic anti-ship missiles, which are designed to target both maritime and terrestrial threats. These missiles, in service since 2007, boast a range of 400 kilometers and can reach speeds up to 4,322 km/h. Equipped with a 225 kg self-forging fragments warhead, the HF-3 is highly effective against enemy ships and ground targets.
Statements and Reactions
China’s aggressive maneuvers have been accompanied by stern rhetoric. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin declared that the forces advocating for Taiwan’s independence will be crushed. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s military has also mobilized its coast guard and additional defensive systems to counter any potential incursion.
As the situation remains volatile, both Taiwan and the international community, including US forces, are closely monitoring developments. The deployment of sophisticated defense systems like the HF-3 missile underscores Taiwan’s readiness to defend its sovereignty against any aggressive actions by China.
