On Tuesday, U.S. forces launched airstrikes targeting an Iranian-backed militia’s weapons storage and logistics facility in Syria. This move followed a rocket attack on American troops, as reported by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). While CENTCOM did not name the specific militia, it confirmed that there was no damage to U.S. facilities or casualties among American or allied personnel.
These strikes came a day after the U.S. had conducted additional air operations, hitting nine positions associated with Iran-aligned groups in response to recent escalations involving drones and rocket attacks. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, reported that Monday’s airstrikes resulted in the deaths of four individuals connected to pro-Iran factions in Syria.
The United States maintains around 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq as part of the coalition efforts against the Islamic State, established in 2014. However, recent conflicts, especially since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, have seen an increase in attacks by pro-Iran factions on U.S. forces in the region, believed to be in response to American support for Israel. In turn, the U.S. has carried out multiple retaliatory strikes on Iranian-backed groups.
