Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as India’s Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as India’s Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Saturday, although he is expected to hold the post for only 74 days before his retirement in November. According to the Constitution of India, Supreme Court judges must retire at the age of 65. The chairman is appointed by the president based on age.

Earlier this month, Lalit’s predecessor Chief Justice NV Ramana said 65 “is too early to retire” as a judge. According to the National Judicial Data Grid, there are an estimated 45 million cases pending in Indian courts. The slow phase-out was mainly due to a shortage of judges, with about 5,000 vacancies in the lower judiciary and 400 vacancies for high court judges. The Supreme Court currently has around 30 judges, with four vacancies.
