The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a series of petitions from August 2 challenging the repeal of Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will conduct daily hearings from Wednesday.
The bench, which also included Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant, on July 11 fixed July 27 as the deadline for filing written submissions and compilations by various parties.
The five-judge bench said the hearing would be held every day except Monday and Friday, which are days for hearing various matters in the apex court. On these days, only new admissions petitions are processed and routine matters are not discussed.
She instructed two lawyers one each from the petitioners and the government to prepare a convenient compilation and submit it by July 27, and made it clear that no documents would be accepted after that date. A convenient note provides the court with a snapshot of the entire case to help it quickly assess the facts.
It said the Centre’s affidavit in view of the conditions prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir after the August 5, 2019 notification of abrogation of Article 370 will have no bearing on the constitutional question to be heard by the five-judge bench.
