Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has claimed that Western powers aim to extend the Ukraine conflict to the Asia-Pacific region. Speaking at the Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, a prominent military diplomacy event in China, Shoigu accused NATO of concealing a military build-up in the Asia-Pacific under the pretense of seeking dialogue. He alleged that NATO countries were fueling an arms race and escalating military drills in the region.
Shoigu also noted that U.S. forces plan to exchange information on missile launches with Japan and South Korea to deter Russia and China. He emphasized that Russia’s decision to withdraw from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty should not be interpreted as a change in its nuclear weapons policy or a lower threshold for their use.
