Chief Justice NV Ramana on Saturday (April 30) said India had a deficit of 40 million cases in the lower courts. We have 20 million judges each, which is not enough to deal with the growing number of cases, “Ramana said at a conference attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several provincial ministers.
He also highlighted that many of the 24,000 accredited positions of chief justice of India’s lower courts have not been filled. At the time, Modi said, “I would urge all CMs and CJs in the high courts to prioritize these issues on the basis of humanity and the rule of law.”
“We need to promote local languages in the courts. This will not only increase the confidence of ordinary citizens in the justice system but will also make them feel more connected to it.”
“In 2015, we identified about 1,800 obsolete laws. Of these, 1,450 such institutional laws were abolished. However, only 75 such laws were abolished by the provinces,” he added.Prime Minister Modi said as India celebrates 75 years of Freedom, the focus should be on building a justice system where justice is readily available, expedited and universal.
“In our country, although the function of justice is to uphold the Constitution, the legislature represents the interests of the people. I believe the merger of the two will pave the way for a more effective and timely justice system for the country,” he said.
PM Modi also emphasized his view of the use of technology in governance in the context of the judiciary.
