IMD alert rains hit several parts of India over the weekend, leading to waterlogging and traffic problems

Torrential rains hit several parts of India over the weekend, leading to waterlogging and traffic problems, including the capital region of Delhi. Meanwhile, district administrations in many parts of Uttar Pradesh have declared a holiday for children up to class 12 on Monday due to the meteorological department’s warning of heavy downpour.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain is also expected to continue over Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan and over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the next two days, while rainfall will continue in Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema for the next five days.

Here are the latest weather updates:

1. Schools will remain closed on Monday in cities including Lucknow, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur and Agra in Uttar Pradesh. The state has already been witnessing incessant rain for the last few days.

2. Rain has claimed at least five lives in Uttar Pradesh so far, police said, according to reports. In Gorakhpur, two people were killed in a boat capsizing accident in the Rapti river. A 90-year-old woman was killed in Ghaziabad after a house collapsed due to rain. A 14-year-old boy was killed and several others were injured in three incidents in the capital region of Bulandshahr.

3. Rainfall comes after a long dry spell during the monsoon season. Noida also witnessed heavy waterlogging after heavy downpours lashed Delhi-NCR since Saturday, causing traffic jams and disruptions that hampered daily life.

4. On the other hand, Delhi received 74 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, the second highest rainfall in a single day in October since 2007, according to IMD data. However, the national capital is unlikely to see significant rainfall from Monday, while the IMD said drizzle or light rain may continue.

5. However, seemingly incessant rain reduced the minimum temperature to 20.8 degrees Celsius on Friday and the maximum temperature to 23.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday – the lowest difference since 1969, according to estimates – in the state capital.

6. In Rajasthan, Udaipur faced a sudden change in weather and several parts of the city witnessed heavy downpour on Sunday.

7. The IMD Meteorological Centre, Amaravati, in Andhra Pradesh has predicted light to moderate rains for the next five days. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are also likely over Rayalaseema region as well as NCAP, SCAP and Yanam in the next three days.

8. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for parts of central Maharashtra, Marathwada and over Konkan till Wednesday. Several parts of Mumbai were flooded over the weekend.

9. In the eastern region, widespread moderate rainfall with isolated places of very heavy rain was likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday, the weather office said.

10. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are also very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya till Wednesday; and through Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till Tuesday.
