R Madhavan Takes the Reins at FTII: A New Chapter in Indian Cinema Education

In a significant development for Indian cinema and education, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has appointed renowned actor R Madhavan as the President of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Society and the Chairperson of the Governing Council. This prestigious appointment comes following the conclusion of former President Director Shekhar Kapur’s tenure on March 3, 2023.

Sayyid Rabeehashmi, the Registrar of FTII, officially confirmed the news, stating, “Mr. R Madhavan has been appointed the President of FTII Society and Chairman of the Governing Council. The decision has been formally conveyed to us by the Ministry.”

The FTII Society, under the leadership of the FTII Chairperson, comprises 12 nominees. Eight of these nominees fall under the category of ‘Persons of Eminence,’ while the remaining four are FTII alumni. Traditionally, the Ministry nominates these members during the appointment of the institute’s Chairperson. However, this tradition was previously deviated from when actor Anupam Kher assumed the role in October 2017.

The Ministry appears to have followed a similar approach in appointing R Madhavan, as other nominations have not yet been announced. Once a quorum of 24 members is assembled, including 12 ex-officio members, several councils, including the Governing Council, Academic Council, and Standing Finance Committee, will be formed from among these members. These councils will be entrusted with making critical decisions concerning the institute’s administrative, academic, and financial affairs.

R Madhavan has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema with his remarkable performances in blockbuster films like ‘3 Idiots,’ ‘Tanu Weds Manu,’ and ‘Rang De Basanti.’ Beyond his acting prowess, he made his directorial debut with ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect,’ which recently clinched the Best Feature Film Award at the 69th National Awards. Madhavan also played a pivotal role in the film’s script and co-wrote it alongside Anant Mahadevan and Rahul Pandey.
