Eight Former Indian Navy Personnel Sentenced to Death in Qatar: India Expresses Shock and Promises Legal Action

A court in Qatar has sentenced eight former Indian Navy personnel to death, leaving the Indian government in shock and vowing to explore all legal avenues to secure the release of its citizens. These individuals had been detained in Qatar for over a year and faced repeated bail rejections, with their detention extended by Qatari authorities.
They were working for a private firm, Al Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, which provided training and related services to Qatar’s armed forces and security agencies. The individuals held prominent positions within the firm, including a retired naval commander.
India’s Reaction to the Verdict
The Indian government responded to the court’s verdict with deep shock. While awaiting the detailed judgment, the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that it is in touch with the detainees’ family members and legal team and is exploring all available legal options. The case is of high importance, and the Indian government has been closely monitoring it.
Furthermore, the ministry will extend consular and legal assistance and intends to raise the verdict with Qatari authorities. Due to the confidential nature of the proceedings, the ministry refrained from making further comments at this time.
Charges and Detention Conditions
The specific charges against the eight detainees have not been publicly disclosed, but insiders have stated that they face espionage charges. These individuals had been held in solitary confinement for significant periods. Recently, Qatari authorities ordered an Indian journalist and his spouse to leave the country for their reporting on the case. The first trial for the Indian nationals took place in late March.
Family Appeals and Government Intervention
Family members of the detained individuals have appealed for the Indian government’s intervention to bring their loved ones back home. Meetu Bhargava, the sister of one of the officers, made a plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post. She emphasized the officers’ contributions to the nation and urged immediate action to bring them back to India.
