PM Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Aadi Mahotsav’, a mega national tribal festival at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the ‘Aadi Mahotsav’, a mega national tribal festival at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here in the state capital. He also paid floral tributes to tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda.

Birsa Munda, who belonged to the Munda tribe, was born on 15 November 1875. During British rule in the late 19th century, he spearheaded India’s tribal religious movement for a millennium across the tribal belt of present-day Bihar and Jharkhand.

Celebrating Aadi Mahotsav

His birth anniversary is celebrated as Birsa Munda Jayanti in the country and coincides with Jharkhand Foundation Day. Celebrating the spirit of tribal culture, crafts, cuisine, trade and traditional arts, Aadi Mahotsav is an annual initiative of the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation Limited (TRIFED) under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. This year it is being held from February 16 to 27 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi.

The program will showcase the rich and diverse heritage of tribes from across the country in more than 200 stalls at the venue. Around 1000 tribal artisans participate in the Mahotsav.

“Since 2023 is being celebrated as the International Year of Millets, along with the usual attractions like handicrafts, handloom, pottery, jewelery etc., there will be special emphasis in the Mahotsav on the display of Shree Anna grown by the tribes,” it said in a PMO statement.
