Chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday demanded that Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar take a decision on the disqualification of 16 MLAs as soon as possible.
He made the demand a day after the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on last year’s political crisis that led to the fall of the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government he led following the rebellion of Eknath Shinde, who later joined hands with the BJP to become chief minister.
Thackeray’s party colleague Anil Parab said they would write to Speaker Nawerkar and urge him to speak on the matter as soon as possible.
“The gift of life of 16 MLAs is temporary as the Supreme Court has given ‘reasonable time’ and it has limitations. The Speaker must take a decision as soon as possible,” Thackeray said.
The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that it cannot restore the Thackeray-led MVA government, which resigned without facing a floor test in June last year. It asked the Speaker to decide on the disqualification of the 16 MLAs within a “reasonable time”.
The court also said that the Speaker’s decision to appoint Bharat Gogawale of the Shinde faction as Shiv Sena whip in the Assembly was “against the law”.
