Actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent remarks on Mahakumbh 2025, stating that the ongoing religious gathering is proof of the “power of Sanatan Dharma.”
Responding to Banerjee’s claim that the Maha Kumbh does not occur after 144 years, Chakraborty dismissed her statement as incorrect. “What she is saying is wrong. Seventy crore people have come here and taken a holy dip. Is that incorrect? People have seen the power of Sanatan Dharma,” he told our reporter.
Banerjee had earlier questioned the narrative surrounding Mahakumbh, saying, “The punya snan (holy dip) happens every year. If I’m wrong, correct me. We organize the Gangasagar Mela, so I know about this.”
Banerjee previously faced criticism for calling Mahakumbh 2025 “Mrityu Kumbh,” blaming poor crowd management for stampede-related deaths in Prayagraj. She later clarified that her comments were not directed at the devotees but at the authorities’ handling of the event.
“I respect Mahakumbh and Ganga Maa. But there is no planning. How many people have been recovered? If there is no proper system, people will suffer. I appeal to the Yogi government to provide compensation to the victims of the Mahakumbh 2025 stampede,” she said.
Mahakumbh 2025 has witnessed massive participation, with over 40 lakh devotees taking a holy dip at Sangam on Mahashivratri alone.
