The relationship between the human mind and body is a topic that has challenged great thinkers, including philosophers Aristotle and Descartes, for millennia, scientists said Wednesday. However, the answer seems to lie in the structure of the brain itself.
Scientists said Wednesday they discovered that parts of the human mind brain area called the motor cortex, which controls body movement, are connected to a network involved in thinking, planning, mental arousal, pain and control of internal organs, as well as functions such as blood pressure and heart rate.
They identified a previously unknown system in the motor cortex that manifests itself in multiple nodes that are located between brain regions already known to be responsible for movements of specific body parts – the hands, feet and face – and are engaged when performing many different body movements done together.
The researchers called this system the somato-cognitive action network, or SCAN, and documented its connections to areas of the brain known to help set goals and plan actions.
