Meta Platforms announced on Sunday that it is testing a monthly subscription service called Meta Verified that will allow users to verify their accounts with a government ID and earn a blue badge, as it looks to help content creators grow and build communities.
Launching later this week, the Instagram and Facebook subscription package also includes extra impersonation protection and starts at $11.99 a month on the web or $14.99 a month on Apple’s iOS and Android.
Meta Verified will launch in Australia and New Zealand this week, with other countries rolling out gradually. Meta’s foray into subscription services follows Twitter announcing last month that Twitter Blue will be priced at $11 per month.
The social media giant’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously said he planned to launch several new products that would “enable creators to be much more productive and creative,” while warning of the costs of supporting the technology for a large user base.
Other social media apps, such as Snapchat and Snap Inc’s Telegram messaging app, launched paid subscriptions as a new revenue stream last year.
