NASA has set its sights on an extraordinary mission sending humans on a scientific expedition to Mars as early as 2035. This groundbreaking journey will cover a staggering 250 million miles (402 million kilometers) each way and is expected to take six to seven months. Once on Mars astronauts may spend up to 500 days exploring the planet’s surface before embarking on their return trip to Earth.
To prepare for this monumental challenge, NASA’s Artemis program is focused on returning humans to the Moon by 2026. This initiative will serve as a stepping stone for the Mars mission, allowing astronauts to practice living and working on a foreign celestial body.
Exploring Mars’ Mysteries
NASA’s mission to Mars is driven by the desire to explore and answer some of the most pressing scientific questions about the red planet. Mars, which formed alongside Earth 4.6 billion years ago, was once a water-rich planet with oceans, lakes, and rivers. Around 3.8 billion years ago when life emerged on Earth Mars had a dense atmosphere and abundant liquid water. However, today, Mars is a cold, dry world with a thin atmosphere consisting mostly of carbon dioxide.
Scientists have already gathered significant information about Mars from robotic missions, but many mysteries remain unsolved. The contrasting landscapes of Mars’ northern and southern hemispheres, its massive volcanoes, and ancient craters provide clues about the planet’s geological history. Understanding how Mars transitioned from a potentially habitable environment to its current state could offer insights into planetary evolution and even Earth’s future.
Searching for Life on Mars
One of the biggest questions NASA hopes to answer is whether Mars ever hosted life. Given that Mars and Earth were once similar in climate and atmosphere, the possibility that life may have developed on the red planet is tantalizing. NASA’s Human Exploration of Mars Science Analysis Group has identified this as a top priority for human exploration. In addition to studying potential signs of past life, astronauts will investigate how Mars lost its liquid water and much of its atmosphere, which may provide a deeper understanding of planetary climate change.
Preparing for the Mars Mission
To make the Mars mission a reality, NASA has developed the Space Launch System (SLS), a powerful rocket designed for deep space exploration, and the Orion spacecraft, which will carry astronauts on long-duration missions. These technologies were successfully tested during the Artemis I mission in 2022, when Orion orbited the Moon and returned safely to Earth.
As NASA progresses toward Mars, the Artemis missions will be critical for training astronauts to live in harsh environments. The Artemis III mission, slated for 2026, will send humans to the lunar south pole, where scientists believe there are significant water ice deposits. The goal is to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon as a testing ground for the eventual Mars mission.
