Anticipating a potential influx of people fleeing violence in Bangladesh, the Manipur government has directed the Deputy Commissioners of Pherzawl and Jiribam districts to implement night curfews and strengthen security measures. This decision, made on Tuesday evening, aims to prevent illegal migration due to the deteriorating law and order situation in the neighboring country.
Manipur’s Precautionary Measures
The directive from the Home Department’s Joint Secretary highlights the necessity of taking strict precautions to manage the situation. It instructs the Deputy Commissioners to:
•Impose night curfew.
•Maintain a strict vigil by district police and other security forces along the borders at all times.
Following this directive, night curfews were imposed in Pherzawl and Jiribam districts under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
While Manipur shares a 398 km international border with Myanmar, it does not have a direct border with Bangladesh. However, it shares inter-state borders with southern Assam, which does border Bangladesh. This geographic detail underscores the interconnected nature of the region and the need for coordinated security measures.
In a similar move, Meghalaya, which shares a 445 km border with Bangladesh, imposed a night curfew on Monday. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong announced that the curfew would cover areas within 200 meters of the zero line to prevent unauthorized movement. The BSF has been tasked with maintaining a strict vigil along the India-Bangladesh border in the state.
These measures in Manipur and Meghalaya reflect the broader regional concerns about maintaining security and order amidst instability in Bangladesh. The prompt response and coordinated actions underscore the importance of vigilance and preparedness in managing cross-border migration and ensuring the safety and security of border areas.
