Cases of lung cancer in India are increasing at a rapid pace & common myths related to lung cancer

Even though the cases of lung cancer in India are increasing at a rapid pace, there are many misconceptions associated with it and the awareness of this cancer is significantly low due to the myths surrounding it. This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, in our quest to solve it, we’ve got a doctor on board to help you separate fact from fiction, as lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in people of all ages.

In an interview , Dr. Suhas Aagre, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Hemato-Oncologist, Asian Cancer Institute revealed, “Lung cancer can lead to higher mortality and morbidity. Symptoms of this cancer are cough, wheezing, hoarseness, weakness, fatigue, poor appetite, weight loss and even respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia.” He added: “The causes of lung cancer can be attributed to smoking, damage to lung tissue, pollution and inhalation of dangerous chemicals, but many people fail to recognize the symptoms of lung cancer early and tend to suffer in silence. Moreover, people also believe in myths and neglect this cancer.”

Dr Suhas Aagre dispelled some common myths related to lung cancer:

1. Myth: Only smokers will get lung cancer

Fact: This statement is incorrect. Not only smokers, but also those with a family history of lung cancer, pollution and second-hand smoke can also increase the risk of lung cancer. It is better to stop thinking that only smokers will suffer from this, it can happen to anyone at any time.

2. Myth: It is not possible to reduce the risk of lung cancer

Fact: One should avoid smoking, avoid pollution, wear a mask to reduce the risk of lung cancer. In addition, one should eat well, exercise daily and maintain an optimal weight.

3. Myth: Only seniors suffer from lung cancer

Fact: This is not a correct statement. Lung cancer can occur in young children as well as adults. This is also observed in men and women equally. It does not spare anyone or any gender.

4. Myth: Lung cancer means death

Fact: Early diagnosis and treatment can help with a better prognosis for lung cancer. So early detection can save lives.

5. Myth: Lung cancer surgery can spread the cancer

Fact: Lung cancer spreads through the bloodstream and lymphatic system. You need to be sure that the surgery will not cause spread or metastasis. In fact, surgery will help remove a malignant (cancerous) tumor from the lung.
