DUBAI: A devastating fire broke out in a worker housing building in Mangaf, southern Kuwait, early Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 41 people. The incident, reported at 6:00 a.m. local time (0300 GMT), has been attributed to violations and greed by real estate owners, according to the country’s deputy prime minister, Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah.
Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad, who also oversees the interior and defense ministries, expressed strong criticism towards property owners during his visit to the site of the tragedy. “Unfortunately, the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters,” he stated, highlighting the role of negligent practices in the incident.
Major General Eid Rashed Hamad reported that the fire was quickly contained. However, the building, heavily occupied by workers, saw a significant loss of life due to smoke inhalation. “Dozens were rescued, but unfortunately there were many deaths as a result of inhaling smoke from the fire,” another senior police commander told state TV.
Authorities have frequently warned against the dangers of overcrowding in worker accommodations. The senior police commander reiterated this concern, emphasizing the recurring issue of cramming too many workers into insufficient spaces. However, specific details regarding the workers’ employment types or their countries of origin were not disclosed.
While the fire has been contained, investigations are underway to determine its exact cause. The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about housing safety standards and the treatment of migrant workers in the region.
