Governance Focus: Krishna Srinivasan Appoints as Director of the Asia and Pacific Department: IMF

Kristalina Georgieva, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), announced today her intention to appoint Krishna Srinivasan as Director of the Asia and Pacific (APD) Department. The appointment of Mr. Srinivasan as Director of APD takes office on June 22, 2022. He will replace Changyong Rhee, whose retirement was announced in the Fund on March 23, 2022.Mr. Srinivasan, originally from India, has been with the Fund for more than 27 years, starting with the Economist program in 1994. He is currently the Deputy Director at APD, where he oversees the department’s oversight function in a number of important and important countries. such as China and Korea, and smaller Pacific regions such as Fiji and Vanuatu. It also oversees the work of APD in key ASEAN countries, namely Malaysia and Singapore, and well-developed economies, including Australia and New Zealand.

 During the Global Financial Crisis, while in the Department of Research (RES), Mr. Srinivasan led the Fund’s work in the G20 including the preparation of notes to analyze meetings of G20 Ministers and Leaders. Krishna is a highly respected member of our Fund family and has made many significant and new contributions to our work throughout his career in the Fund. His appointment as Director is the culmination of his long record of leadership in a number of different departments, including the African Ministry (AFR), the European Department (EUR), the Department of Finance and Financial Markets (MCM), RES, Strategy, Policy and the Department of Review (SPR), and and the Western Hemisphere Department (WHD). This series of work and information reflects her work where she has fully served the Fund’s membership from low-income countries, to emerging markets, and economically developed countries, ”said Ms Georgieva.

Mr. Srinivasan has been a thought leader in bringing climate change to the Fund’s major economic activity, which includes exploring disaster risk management strategies. He has worked on private debt restructuring, access to financial markets, private corporate involvement in problem solving, and backlogs. He has also been a part-time advocate for a support center for members with long-term structural change needs, which is particularly important for consideration in the design of the Sustainability and Stability Trust.

Mr. Srinivasan holds a PhD (Honors) in Economics from Indiana University, a Master’s in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, and a Bachelor’s (Honors) in Economics from the University of Delhi.“I look forward to working with Krishna to create a Fund strategy for Asia and the Pacific. Please join me in congratulating him on his important appointment, ”concluded Ms Georgieva.“Over the years, he has built up a wonderful reputation as a first-rate participant and a loyal adviser in his relationships with colleagues in the Fund and with national authorities alike. He is known for promoting open dialogue as a way to build stronger relationships and achieve consensus with the country’s authorities. Krishna also helped to expand the work of the Fund’s many staff members as a trainer and mentor. As a Director, I know you will continue to provide good leadership and advice to our members and staff within and outside the APD, ”said Ms Georgieva.

Prior to joining the Fund, Mr. Srinivasan was Assistant Professor of Economics and International Finance at Indiana-Purdue University and coordinator at the World Bank in DC and in the Center for Policy Research and Planning in New Delhi. His extensive research into Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, as well as climate change and other economic and development issues has appeared in books, academic journals, and media publications.
