In the midst of a diplomatic tension between India and Canada triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of potential Indian government involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist in Canada, the United States has advocated for a comprehensive investigation into the matter. US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, expressed his concerns over Trudeau’s allegations and emphasized the significance of adhering to principles of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference.
Trudeau’s statement in the House of Commons on Monday decried any foreign government’s involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil as an “unacceptable violation of our sovereignty.” In response, India promptly rejected these allegations as “absurd” and “motivated” and retaliated by expelling a senior Canadian diplomat in response to Canada’s expulsion of an Indian official in connection with the case.
The victim, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Khalistani separatist leader, was fatally shot by two gunmen in Surrey on June 18.
Ambassador Garcetti stressed that while such allegations were concerning, it was crucial to allow space for an active criminal investigation to unfold and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice before making judgments. He emphasized the importance of respecting the principle of sovereignty during this process.
The US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby, voiced support for Ottawa’s efforts to investigate the matter and encouraged New Delhi to cooperate fully. He called for a transparent and comprehensive investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
Garcetti refrained from dictating actions to leaders of other nations but emphasized the fundamental principles of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference. He highlighted the strong relationship between the US and Canada and expressed hope that traditional friends and partners could collaborate to address issues like Khalistani protests.
In summary, the United States advocates a thorough and transparent investigation into the Khalistani separatist killing, aligning with Canada’s stance and emphasizing the need to uphold international law and sovereignty throughout the process.
