Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, after authorities allegedly found 14.8 kilograms of gold in her possession. She was presented before a judge on Tuesday evening and has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
Who is Ranya Rao?
Hailing from Chikamagaluru, Karnataka, she pursued an engineering degree from Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore. Rao made her film debut in 2014 opposite Sudeep in the Kannada film Maanikya, a remake of the Telugu film Mirchi.
She starred alongside Vikram Prabhu in the 2016 Tamil film Wagah, portraying a Pakistani woman caught amid riots. In 2017, she played a journalist in the Kannada comedy film Pataki, opposite actor Ganesh.
Rao claims to be the stepdaughter of IPS officer and DGP (Police Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case, with officials examining possible links to a larger smuggling network.
