U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are set to attend a service for former first lady Rosalynn Carter in Georgia on Tuesday, according to an announcement from the White House. The tribute service will take place at Glen Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta. Carter passed away earlier this week after entering hospice care at her home in Plains, Georgia, alongside her husband, former President Jimmy Carter.
On Monday, Rosalynn Carter’s body will lie in repose in the lobby of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, providing an opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects. The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, followed by interment at the family residence in Plains.
The Bidens’ attendance at the memorial service and the subsequent funeral reflects the significance of Rosalynn Carter’s role as a former first lady and her impact on American public life. The Carters were known as the longest-married U.S. presidential couple, having been married in 1946 when Jimmy Carter was 21 and Rosalynn was 18.
President Biden has also ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff until Rosalynn Carter’s interment as a mark of respect for her contributions and legacy. The Carters’ enduring commitment to public service and their long-standing dedication to each other have left a lasting impact on the nation.
