Japan Earthquake Death Toll Reaches 110 as Search for Survivors Continues

The confirmed death toll from the New Year’s Day earthquake in Japan has reached 110, with more than 200 people still missing. The magnitude 7.6 quake struck the west coast, causing widespread destruction and cutting power to thousands of homes. Rain has hampered rescue efforts, and over 30,000 evacuees are awaiting aid.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed concern about the extent of the damage and urged emergency efforts to restore infrastructure. Japan’s Self-Defence Forces are increasing rescue staff, with road disruptions hindering relief efforts. Some remote communities are isolated due to mudslides and road damage.
