The United States and Japan have decided to launch a new joint international semiconductor research center, Japanese Trade Minister Hagiuda Koichi said at a news conference in Washington. The countries agreed during US-Japan economic talks to work together on next-generation semiconductor research to create a secure source of vital components.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said there was extensive discussion on Friday about “how Japan and the United States could work together, particularly on advanced semiconductors.
