In a tragic incident, 36-year-old Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini died after being impaled by a swordfish while surfing off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The accident occurred near the popular surf break at Ombak Bengbeng, close to Masokut Island. Reports indicate that the swordfish unexpectedly leaped out of the water, fatally stabbing Ms. Manfrini in the chest. Medical examinations revealed a 5cm deep wound on the left side of her chest, with signs of drowning also present.
Ms. Manfrini, a well-known figure in the surfing community, was a surf coach and the founder of AWAVE, a surf travel agency. Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends, highlighting her vibrant spirit, kindness, and passion for life.
James Colston, her co-founder at AWAVE, described Ms. Manfrini as someone who “touched countless people within the surf world” and will be remembered for her care and positivity. Frankie Smithurst, from surf charter operator Naga Laut Mentawai Blue, echoed similar sentiments, praising her “overflowing excitement for life” and her selfless nature.
Two of Ms. Manfrini’s friends were with her at the time of the incident and administered first aid, rushing her to a nearby healthcare facility. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, she could not be saved.
The mayor of her hometown, Venaria Reale, expressed the community’s sorrow in a heartfelt Facebook post, recalling Ms. Manfrini’s passion for surfing and her dream of creating a travel agency for sports holidays. Emotional tributes have also been posted on her Instagram, with many mourning her untimely death and celebrating the full life she lived in her short years.
This devastating event has shocked the surfing world, leaving many grieving the loss of a talented and beloved individual.
