In a significant leap forward, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has accomplished a major milestone with the successful testing of a 3D-printed rocket engine. The test, conducted on May 9, involved a long-duration hot test of the PS4 engine, marking a breakthrough in additive manufacturing (AM) technology.

The PS4 engine, redesigned for production using cutting-edge AM techniques, was crafted entirely in Indian industry, heralding a new era of indigenous manufacturing capabilities in space technology. This innovative approach, also known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the conventional methods of engine production, offering substantial advantages in terms of efficiency and resource utilization.

The engine, part of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) upper stage, utilizes earth-storable bipropellant combinations and boasts a thrust of 7.33 kN in vacuum conditions.
