The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has dispatched a high-level, multi-disciplinary team to Pune, Maharashtra, following a worrying rise in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). This rare neurological disorder, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system, can lead to muscle weakness and, in severe instances, paralysis. The sudden surge has prompted swift action to contain the situation and provide timely public health interventions.
The team comprises seven experts from leading national institutions, including the National Center for Disease Control in Delhi, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bengaluru, and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. While three experts from NIV Pune were already assisting local health authorities, the expanded team is expected to intensify efforts to address the growing crisis.
The health officials are working in close collaboration with the Maharashtra State Health Department to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. They aim to identify potential causes of the outbreak, such as environmental or infectious triggers, while offering technical guidance on managing cases and preventing further spread. Efforts also focus on strengthening healthcare facilities by enhancing diagnostic capacities and ensuring the availability of essential treatments like immunoglobulin therapy.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome, though rare, often follows viral or bacterial infections. It is characterized by symptoms such as tingling sensations, muscle weakness, and difficulties with motor functions. Timely diagnosis and treatment are critical to patient recovery.
