Indian Delegation Discusses Progress and Challenges of Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Project in Hawaii

An Indian delegation, led by Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), visited Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA, to discuss challenges and progress related to the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project. The TMT is a significant astronomical project with a 30-meter diameter primary mirror telescope aimed at advancing optical and infrared astronomy.

India has been a Founder-Member Partner in the TMT project since its approval by the Union Cabinet in 2014. The five-member Indian delegation engaged in discussions with key figures, including Professor Henry Yang, Chairman of the TMT International Observatory (TIO) Board, Professor Robert Kirshner, Executive Director of TIO, and TMT Project Managers on January 9, 2024.

The discussions revolved around the current status of the TMT project, focusing on the Mauna Kea site, the commencement of civil construction, the project’s funding situation, progress in delivering in-kind contributions, and expected timelines under the present circumstances.

The Indian delegation also held separate meetings with various stakeholders, including Mr. Scott Saiki, Speaker of the House, Hawaii State Legislature, Mr. John Komeiji, Chairman, Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority, Mr. Mitch Roth, Mayor of Hawaii County, and other local authorities and community representatives.

The discussions encompassed diverse topics, such as the inclusion of native Hawaiians in decision-making processes, the project’s future course given the current circumstances, and the overall way forward.

The Indian delegation received comprehensive updates on various aspects of the TMT project, including the involvement of native Hawaiians, funding availability, civil construction progress, and developmental activities related to the establishment of the Thirty Meter Telescope. The discussions aimed to address challenges and ensure the smooth advancement of the project.
