Piyush Goyal asks to increase Indian share in global trade to 10%, develop skills of future

Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, has urged increasing India’s share in global trade to 10 per cent and elevating the share of Indian exports in GDP to about 25 per cent.

While addressing the closing session of the Post-Budget Webinar on ‘Make in India for the World’, he said that although these are very ambitious targets, they are quite achievable.

The Minister called for ranking India among the top 3 nations in Global Services Trade. He asked to support the MSMEs in the foreign trade, other than creating top ten Research & Development labs or innovation centres so that India can be positioned as a global leader in technology during the next 25 years.

He asked to strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem in a collective manner and create jobs, so as to make India self-reliant. With the exception of the Defence systems, the Government is making a more open regulatory procedure for the Drones sector, the Union Minister said.

He also said that the Industry should be projected to make India a manufacturing centre for Drones. He added that the quality framework for the product should be integrated with the complete method, from the start to the finish, rather than just being focused on the final product.

He also insisted on the need to have a curriculum for the sector, which could potentially help in elevating the technically sound and qualified manpower required for the growth of the drone sector and hence the growth of the trade for the sector. The academic courses need to be relevant to what is required for efficient job completion and to cater to that some research needs to be done on what is being taught presently and what is required, the release said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi had delivered a special address in the webinar that was organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). After the opening session, three back-to-back sessions were held which covered:

  • A paradigm shift in manufacturing in India @ 100,
  • Charting out the strategy for Realizing India’s Trillion Dollar Goal in Exports and
  • Exploring how the MSMEs will act as the Growth Engine for Indian Economy.

The closing session witnessed the Presentation of Action Plans by three senior Industry leaders, i.e, the Session Moderators, on the outcomes and the way forward. Senior officials of the Central and State Governments also participated in the deliberations.
