A herd of elephants living in the neighboring Chhattisgarh area attacked a couple sleeping outside their home in Shahdol village in Madhya Pradesh, where a woman died, officials said on Friday. Speaking to PTI, Jaisinghnagar Forest Range official Abhilasha Rao Kalwa said the bodies were attacked by Ramkaran Singh, 48) and his wife Draupati Singh, 40, lying outside their under construction house in Nadama Patour village, 70 kilometers from the regional capital. , midnight Thursday.
“The woman was trampled by elephants until she died, while her husband fled with minor injuries,” she said, adding about 10 pachyderms in the herd. The deceased’s family was later given Rs 4 lakh financial assistance, Kalwa said. According to officials, the elephants strayed into Madhya Pradesh from Chhattisgarh and were on their way back at the time of the incident. A warning was added to the area and the movement of the herd was tracked, they added. In April, a herd of seven elephants had entered Shahdol from Chhattisgarh killing five people.
