A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Mexico on Monday evening, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, while a seismic alert prompted some residents of the capital to evacuate buildings as a precaution.
No major damage or injuries were immediately reported. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the Pacific beach resort of Puerto Escondido in the southern state of Oaxaca, according to the USGS.
Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara tweeted that he had asked authorities to “implement the necessary safety protocols” to investigate potential damage.
