Earthquake shakes central Taiwan: Japan

A powerful earthquake shook the sea between eastern Taiwan and southwestern Japan on Monday, but authorities say there is no danger of a tsunami. A small earthquake was reported in Taipei, but no damage was reported. Japanese authorities say a magnitude 6.6 earthquake shakes the island south and west of Yonaguni, about 110 miles (66 miles) east of Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said the 6.1 magnitude earthquake was 27 kilometers deep. The U.S. The Geological Survey said the quake was 6.3 magnitude. Initial values ​​may vary immediately after an earthquake and may be revised after further analysis.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami. The weather station said at 3:23 p.m. (0623GMT) earthquake struck 20 miles (12 miles) below sea level.

The center said there may be minimal water swelling but no tsunami risk.
