The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two people in connection with a massive drug bust seizing nearly 3,000 kg of heroin – in Gujarat’s Mundra port, after which it conducted searches at 20 locations across the capital and three states. the agency said on Thursday. The raids were carried out on Wednesday over a drug scam uncovered in September last year. The arrested Harpreet Singh Talwar alias Kabir Talwar and Prince Sharma are residents of Delhi and are part of an international crime ring that smuggled large quantities of heroin from Afghanistan for commercial purposes, an NIA spokesperson said.
The agency conducted simultaneous searches at 20 locations 14 in Delhi, three in West Bengal, two in Gujarat and one in Punjab in connection with the case on Wednesday. The NIA said the arrests were made based on investigations so far and incriminating evidence obtained during searches.
Mundra port drug bust case
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 2988 kg of heroin at Mundra port in Gujarat on September 13 last year. The consignment was smuggled by sea from Kandahar in Afghanistan via Bandar Abbas in Iran, the DRI said. The containers were originally declared to contain semi-processed talc and bituminous coal. However, after a detailed investigation, DRI officials seized 2,988 kg of heroin from two containers on September 17 and 19. Eight people, including four Afghan nationals, one Uzbek national and three Indians, were detained last year.
The latest arrests, the NIA said, were made based on investigations so far and incriminating evidence obtained during searches. The accused persons were involved in importation of narcotics through fake or shell import companies and further facilitated its transportation to Delhi-based Afghan nationals who were involved in clearing and distribution of heroin in multiple states including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh,” the NIA said . The official said the agency’s investigation continues to uncover the entire supply chain and network of money laundering, drug distribution and other players involved.
