Disaster Focus: State information on damage caused by natural disasters in North Eastern States

State information on damage caused by natural disasters, including floods, is not maintained centrally by this ministry. Details of damage caused by hydro-meteorological calamities during the last five years (FY 2018-19 to FY 2022-23 as on 12.07.2022) as assessed/reported by North Eastern States.

Flood management falls under the purview of state governments and flood protection schemes etc. are formulated and implemented by the states concerned. The Union Government is complementing the efforts of the States including the North East Region (NER) States by providing technical guidance, financial resources and assistance in flood management in critical areas. Central assistance of Rs. 139.91 million dollars has been released to NER states for erosion/flood control and landslide prevention during the last 5 years (FY 2017-18 to FY 2021-22) under North Eastern Council programmes.

Also, the North Eastern Space Application Center (NESAC), an institution established as a joint initiative of the Department of Space and the North Eastern Council, uses satellite data to develop an early warning system for natural disasters such as floods.
