Delhi is gearing up for a sharp plunge in temperatures, with the mercury expected to dip as low as 6°C by December 10, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The chilly conditions are set to bring cold waves across northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, with the chill likely to persist until December 14.
Recent Rainfall and Western Disturbances
Light rainfall across parts of Delhi on Sunday evening, caused by a western disturbance over central Pakistan, has set the stage for the approaching cold wave. Areas like Akbar Road, Pandara Park, and Kota House experienced showers, providing a brief reprieve before colder conditions take over.
IMD’s Forecast Highlights
•December 9: Northern India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, will start feeling the cold wave.
•December 10: Delhi’s minimum temperature is predicted to drop to 6°C, with foggy mornings anticipated.
•December 11-14: Cold wave conditions will intensify in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh.
IMD scientist Naresh Kumar explained, “After December 9, temperatures will decline sharply, with the cold wave conditions developing in Rajasthan first and then spreading to neighboring states.”
Snowfall Brings Cheer to Himachal Pradesh
Shimla and nearby tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh witnessed the season’s first snowfall, drawing tourists and boosting the hospitality sector. Higher reaches in districts like Shimla and Mandi are expected to see more snow, with isolated light precipitation forecast for other regions.
Despite the dip in temperatures, Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated. The average Air Quality Index (AQI) fell into the ‘very poor’ category at 302 on Sunday. Although restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage IV were recently relaxed, GRAP Stages II and I remain in effect.
As Delhi and its neighboring states brace for colder days ahead, the combination of foggy mornings and poor air quality highlights the challenges of winter in the capital. Residents are advised to prepare for the coming cold wave while taking precautions against the adverse air conditions.
