In a significant move during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls, Delhi Police seized ₹47 lakh in unaccounted cash from a vehicle in Sangam Vihar. The seizure occurred at a T-point on Mangal Bazar Road, where a car was stopped for checking by a Static Surveillance Team (SST).
The vehicle was being driven by Waseem Malik, a 24-year-old scrap dealer and resident of Sangam Vihar. According to officials, Malik failed to provide the necessary documentation for the cash. The amount was subsequently confiscated, and an investigation is underway to determine its source, as per established legal protocols.
Model Code of Conduct and Cash Movement Regulations
The action highlights the strict measures imposed by the Election Commission (EC) to ensure transparency and prevent malpractices during the election period. The MCC includes clear guidelines on the movement of cash:
•Individuals carrying more than ₹50,000 must have proper documentation.
•Unexplained amounts exceeding ₹50,000 will be seized, and sums over ₹10 lakh will be referred to the Income Tax Department for further scrutiny.
•Movements of currency must be documented by authorized persons and recorded in official accounts, particularly for transactions involving foreign exchange or amounts leaving or arriving at an office or branch.
The seizure comes as a reminder of the EC’s commitment to curbing illicit financial flows during elections. By implementing stringent checks and confiscating unaccounted cash, authorities aim to ensure fair practices and uphold the integrity of the democratic process.
While investigations into the Sangam Vihar case continue, the police’s proactive measures underscore the importance of compliance with electoral norms. Citizens are urged to adhere to these guidelines to avoid legal repercussions and contribute to a transparent electoral environment.
