Delhi NCR Braces for Heavy Rainfall as IMD Issues ‘Orange Rain Alert’

June 30, 2024, Delhi — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange rain alert’ for Delhi NCR, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next four days. Starting Sunday, June 30, the region will experience moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph.

The maximum temperature on Sunday is expected to be around 34 degrees Celsius. The monsoon arrived in Delhi on Friday morning, bringing with it 228.1 mm of rainfall the highest for the month of June since 1936.

Friday’s heavy rains caused significant waterlogging in various parts of the city, including the Pragati Maidan tunnel, which remained closed on Saturday as draining operations continued. Public Works Department (PWD) officials anticipate the tunnel will be operational again by late Saturday night.

Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the heavy rains continue in the coming days.
