US Senate presented a report on how the Covid-19 virus could have originated from a laboratory leak

Republicans in the US Senate on Thursday presented a report on how the Covid-19 virus could have originated from a laboratory leak, although they stressed that the findings still lack indisputable evidence. The report is seen as an attempt by the GOP to get the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress to take the theory that the Covid virus escaped from a lab more seriously, Bloomberg reported.

The origin of the Covid-19 virus has become an increasingly preoccupied issue worldwide, with investigations still ongoing to determine where it emerged with evidence. However, many scientists are in favor of the conclusion in Science Magazine published in August that the virus jumped from an animal to a human in the crowded wet markets of Wuhan, China. “I’m concerned because the crowd pushing this narrative is not motivated by scientific facts,” Gigi Gronvall, an immunologist and scientist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security told.

Dr. Ebright, one of the interviewees cited in the report, said he supports the argument that the evidence points to a laboratory origin, the New York Times reported. However, the only new element in the report appeared to be questions about how China could develop a vaccine so quickly, which scientists did not find convincing. Otherwise, he said, “there was no information in the report that was not publicly presented in the media and discussed in the media before.”

Richard Burr, ranking member of the panel, said he hoped the report would provide guidance to the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international institutions and researchers. “It is absolutely critical that we learn from this pandemic so that we never find ourselves in a similar situation again,” said US Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Chairwoman Patty Murray. “I remain committed to passing the PREVENT Pandemics Act, which has advanced out of committee with overwhelming bipartisan support,” she added.
