Congress on Friday paid tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on the day of his death when Rahul Gandhi said the views, ideas and vision of India’s first prime minister in the nation were still relevant even after 58 years since his death. Nehru, India’s first prime minister, held office between August 1947 and May 1964. He died on May 27, 1964.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi presented Nehru with brilliant gifts as she celebrated her 58th death in Shanti Vana here. In a tweet, former Congressman Rahul Gandhi said, “Fifty-eight years after his death, the views of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, politics and our vision. The nation is as important as ever.”
“May the values of this immortal Indian son always guide our actions and conscience,” he said.
Congress, in its official Twitter conclusion, praised Nehru as a courageous liberator of war, a modern Indian architect, a politician, a visionary, a patriot, and “the true son of Bharat Mata”.
“Billions of greetings and billions of spells to our first prime minister on the day of his death,” the group wrote on Twitter.
Several Congress leaders such as party secretary general K C Venugopal, party spokesman RandeepSurjewala, Rajasthan Prime Minister Ashok Gehlot and his Chhattisgarh counterpart BhupeshBaghel also paid tribute to Nehru on the day of his death.
