IMD issues red alert for fog, Cold wave and dense fog prevail in North India

Severe cold waves and dense fog continued to prevail in northern India on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing red and yellow alerts in several parts of the country.

According to the IMD weather agency “cold to severe cold day” condition is likely at several places in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttarakhand. “A cold wave is likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan”.

In particular, the IMD declares a “cold wave” when the minimum temperature drops to 4 degrees Celsius or below and/or is 4.5 degrees below normal. A “cold day” is declared when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or lower and/or is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal for the season for two consecutive days.

Here are the latest updates:

1. The IMD on Tuesday issued a cold to severe cold day warning at several places over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and isolated places over Uttarakhand; while a cold wave warning was issued at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

2. The meteorological agency also predicted “dense to very dense fog” in many places including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad (PoK), Himachal Pradesh and West Rajasthan. Meanwhile, a red fog alert has been issued in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Bihar.

IMD says “Visibility less than 100 m on Tuesday at 8:30 AM in Jammu Division Jammu, Pantnagar Uttarakhand, Punjab Patiala, Amritsar and Ludhiana, Haryana Bhiwani and Karnal, Delhi Palam, Rajasthan, Gangaraja Goricha, Luck’ Praiagang Baraganakh, UP , Bhagalpur and Purnea”.

3. Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning. According to the IMD, the minimum temperature is expected to settle at 4 degrees, while the maximum temperature is expected at 19 degrees Celsius.

4. Several flights including – Delhi-Kathmandu, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Shimla, Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Chandigarh-Kullu – were delayed due to fog and cold in the capital, news agency reported.

5. Due to fog, 36 trains are delayed in the Northern Railway region. 36 trains run late in Northern Railway region due to fog.

6. On Saturday, the IMD said that “due to the approaching new Western Disturbance on the night of January 10, minimum temperatures are very likely to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius over northwest India after 24 hours.”
