Beijing – China has leveled accusations against Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), alleging that it recruited a couple working for the central government to spy for the UK. This latest development adds to months of escalating espionage allegations between Beijing and Western powers.
According to a post on its official WeChat account, the Ministry of State Security disclosed that MI6 operatives persuaded a man named Wang, employed in a “core confidential role” within China’s central state apparatus, and his wife, named Zhou, to defect.
The ministry’s statement revealed that British intelligence agents began cultivating Wang’s relationship during his course of study in the UK in 2015. They organized dinners and tours to comprehend his character traits, interests, and aspirations.
Upon discovering Wang’s strong inclination towards financial gain, MI6 allegedly approached him to provide lucrative consulting services, eventually involving access to internal information from central state agencies.
Subsequently, MI6 agents disclosed their identities to Wang and instructed him to return to China to gather intelligence, coercing Zhou into participating in the espionage activities as well.
While the ministry stated that decisive measures had been taken against Wang, it did not disclose further details regarding the couple’s current occupations, the nature of the information they provided, or their whereabouts.
Efforts to reach Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, responsible for MI6 inquiries, for comment are underway.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions between China and Western nations over allegations of espionage. Both sides have recently begun disclosing details of individual cases, reflecting the escalating rivalry in intelligence gathering activities.
