India will introduce a safety measurement system for passenger cars – a move that hopes we will encourage manufacturers to provide improved safety features and improve the “export efficiency” of locally manufactured vehicles. The Department of Road Transport said in a statement it would give a rating of one to five stars on vehicles, based on tests examining the protection of adults and children and safety assistance technologies.
India is the fifth largest car market in the world, with annual sales of about 3 million units per year. Maruti Suzuki, mostly owned by Suzuki Motor of Japan, and Hyundai Motor are the best-selling car manufacturers.
The new system is expected to go live in April 2023. India, which has one of the world’s most dangerous roads, has also proposed that all passenger cars have six airbags, despite opposition from some car manufacturers who say they will increase car costs. Current regulations require two airbags – one for the driver and one for the front passenger.
