Brazil Prepares for COP30: Ambassador Andre Correa do Lago Takes the Helm Amid Challenges

Brazil has appointed Ambassador Andre Correa do Lago as the head of the COP30 climate summit, set to take place in November 2025 in Belem, located in the heart of the Amazon. His appointment comes at a critical juncture as global climate negotiations face challenges, including lingering effects from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.

Ambassador Correa do Lago expressed concern over the impacts of the U.S. withdrawal on climate discussions but remained hopeful about continued dialogue with the country, which remains part of the United Nations climate convention. The summit will focus on critical issues like financing energy transitions in developing nations and forging new commitments to reduce global emissions.

“Despite the challenges, we must push forward. The world cannot afford stagnation in climate action,” Correa do Lago stated during his first public address as head of COP30.

Hosting COP30 in Belem, a city deeply connected to the Amazon rainforest, presents unique logistical challenges. Plans are underway to double the city’s accommodations and infrastructure to host thousands of delegates and global leaders. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration has placed significant emphasis on ensuring the summit’s success, highlighting the importance of amplifying voices from the Amazon region.

Unlike previous summit hosts that faced criticism for appointing officials tied to fossil fuel industries, Brazil’s choice of Correa do Lago reflects a commitment to robust climate policy. Known for his extensive expertise in international climate negotiations, his leadership is expected to facilitate meaningful progress on global warming solutions.

As the world looks toward COP30, Brazil’s preparations and diplomatic efforts will be pivotal in shaping the future of global climate policy.
