Bihar Storm Tragedy 25 Killed in Lightning, Hailstorms More Rain Predicted

In a devastating wave of extreme weather, lightning strikes and hailstorms claimed 25 lives across Bihar on Thursday, according to reports. The tragedy, which followed a similar fatal spell on Wednesday that left 13 dead, has left many parts of the state reeling.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed the following district-wise death toll Nalanda suffered the heaviest loss with 18 deaths, Siwan reported 2 deaths. Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad reported 1 death each

However RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that more than 50 people had died in various storm-related incidents, including wall and tree collapses, and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

He post “I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of more than 50 people… May God provide strength to the families affected by the disaster in this hour of grief”.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in several districts on Friday and Saturday, with more potential for thunderstorms and lightning. Districts under alert include Madhubani, Darbhanga, East & West Champaran, Gopalganj, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada, and Patna.

Residents in these regions are advised to take safety precautions, stay indoors during lightning, and avoid waterlogged areas or structures that may collapse.

As extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change, the need for better early warning systems and community preparedness becomes increasingly urgent.
