United States President Joe Biden will travel to Belgium to attend an extraordinary NATO summit, scheduled to be held on the 24th of March to discuss the ongoing deterrence and defence efforts in response to unprovoked and unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine and will also participate in a European Council Summit, a statement from the White House said on Tuesday.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that President Biden will also join a scheduled European Council Summit to discuss the shared concerns about Russian invasion, including transatlantic efforts to impose economic costs on Russia, provide humanitarian support to those affected by the violence, and address other challenges related to the conflict in Ukraine.
Although, whether President Biden would travel to Poland to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has not been established. The Press Secretary Psaki said that they are working through the final details of Biden’s trip.
The news has come at a time when the fourth round of talks has resumed between Russia and Ukraine, in Belarus.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that the peace talks were sounding more realistic than before but more time was needed for the decisions to be in the interests of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russian air strikes killed five people in Kyiv and the refugee count after the Russian invasion has reached to 3 million.
He tweeted that the consultations on the main negotiation platform have renewed. General regulation matters, ceasefire, withdrawal of troops from the territory of the country.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson said it was too early to predict progress in the talks, but given the current situation, the very fact that the talks are continuing can be taken as being positive.
Meanwhile, Russia imposed sanctions on President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and multiple other United States officials. Russia is also imposing sanctions against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and over more than 300 lawmakers, including Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and Defense Minister Anita Anand.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has entered its 20th day. Till now the Russian forces have not captured any of the Ukraine’s 10 biggest cities.
As the Russian troops continue to advance towards Kyiv, the city imposed curfew from 8 pm on March 15 until 7 am on March 17. The residents are allowed only to go outside to head to the bomb shelters.
