The export of Non-basmati rice to India has seen a dramatic growth of 109% from USD 2925 million in FY 2013-14 to USD 6115 million in FY 2021-22. According to DGCIS, India exported rice to more than 150 countries worldwide by 2021. 22. India has exported more than one million USD to 76 countries out of the 150 countries reported in 2021-22, It shows the diversity of rice exports to India over the years.

27% growth in 2021-22, Rice exports
According to DGCIS data, India has exported non-basmati rice worth USD 2015 in 2019-20, which has risen to USD 4799 million by 2020-21 and USD 6115 million in 2021-22. Registering a 27% growth rate by 2021-22, non-basmati rice export became the leading forex currency for all agricultural assets, at USD 6115 million.
“By partnering with our foreign machinery, we have integrated system development and a focus on high quality production, which has increased the sales of rice in India,” said Dr M. Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Authority (APEDA). Africa Benin is one of the countries importing non-basmati rice from India. Other destinations are Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Cote D’Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Vietnam, Djibouti, Madagascar, Cameroon Somalia, Malaysia, Liberia U.A.E. etc.
In 2020-21, India exported non-basmati rice to nine countries – Timor-Leste, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Swaziland, Myanmar and Nicaragua, where exports were first made or earlier shipments were limited in volume.
Expanding port management infrastructure
India’s push to expand port management infrastructure, the development of a value chain involving key stakeholders and efforts to explore new international opportunities or export markets for rice over the past few years has led to significant increases in rice exports. The COVID19 epidemic, India continues to increase rice exports to African, Asian and European Union markets, thus having a significant share in the global rice trade. Strong international demand also helped India’s growth in rice exports.
The major rice producing regions are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, and Haryana. According to the Second Annual 2021-22 estimates, the total production of Rice in 2021-22 is estimated at 127.93 million tons, which is 11.49 million tons higher than the previous five years of production of 116.44 million tons.
However, according to Advance estimates at the moment 2021-22, the total grain production capacity in the country is estimated at 316.06 million tons which is 5.32 million tons higher than grain production during 2020-21. In addition, production during 2021-22 is 25.35 million tons higher than five years ago ‘(2016-17 to 2020-21) average grain production.
Significantly, India is the world’s second largest rice producer after China. Export record will allow rice producers to lower their stocks and will benefit farmers as the growing demand for Indian Rice may improve their fulfillment. The significant increase in agricultural exports is also seen as evidence of the government’s commitment to increase the income of farmers by improving the export of agricultural products and processed foods.
