January 26, 2024 In a groundbreaking revelation, scientists have uncovered the largest known deep-sea reef in the frigid depths of the Atlantic, teeming with ghostly corals and an array of mysterious sea creatures. The discovery, spanning a vast area off North America’s east coast, has shattered records, becoming a spectacle of unprecedented scale and ecological significance.
“It’s eye-opening – it’s breathtaking in scale,” remarks Stuart Sandin, a marine biologist from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The newfound reef challenges our understanding of these hard-to-reach ecosystems, as more than 75 percent of the world’s ocean floor remains uncharted.
The exploration, facilitated by cutting-edge technology, marks a significant leap in our comprehension of deep-sea environments. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Ocean Exploration team, after more than a decade of systematic mapping and exploration, has illuminated the depths of the Blake Plateau off North America’s coast, showcasing one of the largest deep-sea coral reef habitats ever discovered.
Over 23 submersible dives and 31 multibeam sonar mapping surveys were employed in this colossal effort, revealing a massive reef system in waters ranging from 200 to 1,000 meters deep. Astonishingly, an estimated 83,908 individual coral mounds were identified, providing an unprecedented glimpse into the hidden wonders of the ocean floor.
Unlike their vibrant tropical counterparts, these cold-water corals, such as Lophelia pertusa, exhibit a pale white complexion. Thriving in frigid temperatures, they don’t rely on symbiotic pigment-containing algae and feed on organic matter filtered from surrounding currents. The branching scaffolds created by these corals serve as a sanctuary for a diverse array of deep-sea organisms.
“This discovery highlights the importance of exploring our deepwater backyard,” notes Kasey Cantwell, NOAA Ocean Exploration operations chief. The reef’s staggering size, nearly three times that of Yellowstone National Park at 6,215 square kilometers, underscores the importance of understanding and preserving these ecosystems.
Deep-sea reefs, which cover more of the ocean floor than their tropical counterparts, are vulnerable to climate change, trawling, and mining activities. The recent discovery emphasizes the need for responsible management and conservation efforts to protect these vital marine habitats.
