After a Pakistani tweet Ashish Nehra was one of the top social media trends in India

It’s been almost three months since Gujarat Titans won the IPL 2022 under head coach Ashish Nehra and about a month since the India tour in England where the former India pacer was a pundit and commentator, but out of nowhere on Wednesday (August 10), Ashish Nehra has been one of the top social media trends in India. Twitter was flooded with memes and hilarious comments about Nehra, so much so that former Indian opener and Nehra’s teammate Virender Sehwag became a part of it. For it has become a trend which could give tough competition to ‘dekh rahe ho Binod’ or if we go back a bit, ice bucket challenge. And all this happened without any fault (or success) or knowledge of Nehra. In fact, ironically, Nehra doesn’t even have a social media account on any platform.

The Twitter comments “Ashish Nehra is the first Indian cricketer to win Olympic gold” or “Ashish Nehra is running for British Prime Minister” were created when Pakistani conspiracy theorist and political commentator Zaid Hamid, whose Twitter account is restricted in India, mistook the former Indian fast bowler with India’s Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.

There are two factors behind this wrong tweet that went viral and made Ashish Nehra trend on Twitter. First of all, Neeraj Chopra did not even participate in the men’s javelin at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. An injury took him out of the competition. Second, and of course more significantly, Chopra is referred to as Ashish Nehra. What was meant to be a congratulatory message for Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who created history by winning an individual gold medal for them at the CWG 2022, breaking a Games record, turned out to be a breeding ground for a meme-fest.

For the record, Nadeem and Chopra are great friends. The Indian javelin ace was one of the first to congratulate Nadeem for breaking the 90m barrier, a feat he has yet to achieve himself, and winning gold at the Commonwealth Games by defeating world champion Anderson Peters. Nadeem missed the podium at the Tokyo Olympics last year and also at the World Championships a week before the Birmingham Games.
