Arvind Kejriwal writes to PM Modi asking him not to ‘stop Delhi Budget’

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him not to “stop the Delhi Budget“, amid a spat between the Center and the AAP dispensation in the state capital over the issue.

The presentation of the Delhi government’s budget for 2023-24, which was scheduled for Tuesday, has been put on hold due to Kejriwal’s exemption and central government charges for dealing in allocations under various heads.

Speaking on News18 on Monday, Kejriwal accused the Center of resorting to “gundagardi” and said it was the first time in the country’s history that the government’s budget had been suspended.

A video clip of his speech was tweeted by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Delhi government sources said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has stalled the budget and it will not be presented in the Assembly on Tuesday.

In his letter, Kejriwal said, “This is the first time in the last 75 years that the state budget has been stopped. Why are you angry with Delhiites? Please don’t delay Delhi budget. With folded hands, Delhiites are urging you to exceed their budget.”

As the chief minister lashed out at the Centre, sources in the MHA said the ministry sought an explanation from the AAP government as its budget proposal had a high allocation for advertising and relatively low funding for infrastructure and other development projects initiatives.
